Climate Resilience and Sustainability Collaborative at Makerere University

Makerere University, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, is implementing a Climate Resilience and Sustainability Collaborative Program. The Program aims to advance Africa’s preparedness for, and response to climate change by developing a critical mass of thought leaders needed to enhance Africa’s capacity to transition to green economies. This is a funded Program committed to providing unique opportunities for graduate students and early-career scientists to engage in cutting-edge research and innovation to contribute towards sustainable solutions for climate-related challenges. 

Makerere University is pleased to announce the First Cohort of Six [6] PhD Scholarship opportunities under the Climate Resilience and Sustainability Collaborative Program for the Academic Year 2025/2026.

Application Procedure

Prospective applicants for Scholarships under the Climate Resilience and Sustainability Collaborative at Makerere University's main campus can access and complete the application form AT NO COST through the Online Application Portal (https://apply.caes.mak.ac.ug

The application submission deadline is Friday, 6th June 2025, at 11:59 PM EAT.

ELIGIBILITY: 

To be eligible to apply for Scholarships under the Climate Resilience and Sustainability Collaborative at Makerere University's main campus, an applicant must belong to one of the following categories: persons with disabilities, internally displaced young people, refugees, other Ugandan nationals with socio-economic constraints, and youth from other African countries.

  1. The Applicant must have applied for admission to Makerere University's main campus for the Academic Year 2025/2026.
  2. The Applicant must have completed their Undergraduate education in an African country.
  3. The Applicant should be experiencing financial hardships to pursue higher Education.
  4. The Applicant should not be a holder of any other scholarship.
  5. The Applicant should not be pursuing or have completed any other PhD studies.
  6. The applicant should have engaged in leadership responsibilities and/or community service.
  7. The Applicant should not be more than 40 by the application deadline.
  8. Refugees and Persons with Disabilities should not be more than 45 years by the application deadline.
  9. A Refugee applicant MUST hold a valid Refugee Identity Card or Family Attestation.
  10. The Applicant should have an interest in research, innovation and entrepreneurship in climate resilience and sustainability and committed to complete the degree in 4 years.
  11. The Applicant should have applied for any of the PhD degrees tenable in the following Schools with research focus in any of the identified research themes;
